Flight transfer in Korea

first hours in Asia–

burnt my tongue on delicious bean sprout soup…
ate Kimchee straight from the bowl…
was serenaded by an old man singing folk songs in an abandoned section of the airport.

Thailand- check back for pics/vid all month!

…a shot of my desk

As usual, I am frantically preparing for my next project: this one is quite unusual:
“VACATIONING”
Strange, I know, but the preparations are as time-consuming as any musical or climbing project. Just trying to get all my ideas down on paper and transferred to computer if necessary… last minute inspirations…

Check back for pictures and videos posted every few days as Ash and I reunite and explore Thailand and Cambodia together! Very excited!!

Happy New Year, everyone!

This 9-minute track really represents the progression of our collaboration. Much more interesting and challenging material! Stay posted for more details, and feel free to contact me if you are interested in purchasing a copy of the ‘Plainspeak’. ($18 incl. digital download)

The Red River Gorge

A few pics from the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. This is one of my favorite parts of the gorge, called Purgatory. This is also peak season at arguably the best sport-climbing destination in the US.

Food pics!

I was going through a bunch of my old pics of random dinners that I’ve cooked over the past year.  I needed to find a couple for a dinner-concert poster we were putting together, so I thought I’d share them all here:

Summer hiatus and new projects!

Thanks to everyone for continuing to check my website despite my complete absence for the last couple of months. With the school-year back in swing I’m picking back up where I left off to keep you all in the loop with my crazy life.

Let’s start with a quick run-down of the musical side of things:
- Most recently, Midori made a stop in Chattanooga to play with the symphony and do a lot of student workshops and school performances. So I had to be the piano-schiavo for the masterclasses! Interesting.

- work continues on the fucking INSANE chamber opera: “Dekacophony”. It’s going to be a real spectacle with a 30′x30′ live painting (scaffolding, artists working with paint rollers…) and the band includes strings, woodwinds, prepared piano, electric guitar, synth, and drums.
- I’m also reworking a piece for oboe/piano from 5 years ago and expanding it into a really interesting clarinet/piano sonata.
- the ‘Plainspeak’ tour with Aaron Roche has been sporadic but we’ve played several shows. The album is set to release in a month (end of November)…. and the artwork will blow a parking-garage-sized hole in your mind.
- I’ve already played several chamber recitals this semester and more on the horizon.

On the climbing side of things:
- I have been doing a LOT of endurance training as Autumn sets in and the weather cools off. I feel very fit right now and have completed one or two projects. The list of climbs that I still want to do this season is literally about 3 feet long (it’s tacked to my wall in the bedroom!)
(An area in Alabama with several of my climbing projects)

- I’m planning three trips to the Red River Gorge before the season ends there (gets too cold).

Summer Climbing

I’ve been spending some time up in Kentucky at one of the most beautiful climbing areas in the world: The Red River Gorge. The weather has been less than ideal (hot, humid, sweaty) but I couldn’t pass up the chance to sleep outside, eat and drink with good buddies, and climb!

Here are some pics from our friend Elodie. Thanks for the beautiful work!

life after New Dischord premiere

There is indeed life after the New Dischord premiere weekend. Using some meager “pocket-cam” sources I managed to edit together a couple of short videos including this one in which I go into a little more depth about the philosophy behind New Dischord and my own music:

After two days of intensive recovery, I’m am more excited than ever to make music and grab the reigns of my free-wheeling life. I am gearing up for the ‘Plainspeak’ tour with Aaron Roche. Taking this album on the road is going to be a challenge… I really want to make this a collaboration with student musicians and random ensembles from each of the college-towns we visit. The idea is for me to make custom arrangements of our tunes for each of the venues and their musicians. Then we arrive, rehearse, and put on a unique show in every town.

I’m also very excited to do some solo recording. More about this, but the plan is to lock myself in a cabin in the woods (with a grand piano and recording gear…not exactly roughing it!).
